I have not written on this blog for a long time, and that is because I have had nothing to write. Nothing to write about in terms of my music and any musical projects. I have had little time to write, record and definitely perform any music.
At the end of 2011 I looked back at what music I had written and the numerous projects I had created. I created four projects: 'Anonymous', 'Opus. 1', 'Overzealous Work Ethic', and 'Under the Pyramids'. I was maybe being a little over ambitious trying to create 3 albums in the one year. 'Under the Pyramids' was cut short due to time and inspiration. I did complete these projects and feel this was a very productive year. I was, and still am, particularly happy with 'Anonymous' as an album. I have not successfully written and recorded a 20 track album before.
Moving into 2012, I have focused on developing the artwork for the new project. I tend to write the music and develop the artwork around another. However, I wanted to paint the picture first. The theme. I didn't know what I wanted to do to be honest. I sat one night not long into the new year, and thought about the train journey I had going from Manhattan to Coney Island. I had looked through some photographs I have of me in New York in 2008. The journey I remember well. The ghetto housing, the rocking train; being in a city and place I didn't know. Going to somewhere, I had never been. I wish I could go back. It was a beautiful journey, in a very personal way. And so this, is what has developed the idea behind 'The Orange Line'. The orange line - or 'D' line, is the one that takes you from Manhattan to Coney Island. The project is about a journey. A journey from it's beginning, to it's end. But not a bad journey. A pleasant one. One that changes you. In the subtliest way.
So I looked through the photos I took as I went along The orange line, and I developed these photos in a way that is reminiscent of old artwork myself and my friend Stuart Carroll use to make when we were in the band 'the Heads of State'. This made me think about all the old songs we had made together, and never used. Never finished. Never heard them the way they were suppose to be heard. So I thought the artwork and old song - part of 'Cassette Tapes from 1999', would be perfect. And so I have listened to these old songs, and have picked several I will try and update and add to 'The Orange Line'. These songs are:
- All the Time (Thinking of renaming 'Dwindling in Zenith', which was the original album name we had for these songs way back in 2000)

- Building a Nest (Written in 2009, and would be a perfect song to finish the album with)

It may not be possible to recreate all these songs as I do not remember how to play even half of them. But I will have to re-learn them, and then try and work out all the lyrics too. I don't want to have to change these songs at all from the originals.
So, that is the start of 'The Orange Line'. This is as far as up-to-date as I can get. I have worked out 'All the Time', and will try and create a new version. I have ideas for it, and wish to start as soon as I can. I'm having difficulty at the moment trying to get drum beats appropriate for starting this album with, but I am sure I will get them in time.

Opus. 1
Acoustic versions. That's what I had it named as on my Blackberry notes page. But acoustic versions, is 1. The sort of title I have used before for songs, and 2. Is a bit fucking boring to be honest. So I wanted something to sum up the acoustic versions.
The main reason I wanted to make the acoustic versions, was to finally make a recording of 'Jinx' that I was happy with. It got me thinking that really I should record the songs at their most basic, the way I wrote them, the day I wrote them. I wanted to record all the early songs, and good songs that never made it onto themes that I have created, such as Anonymous. So I wanted this to be essentially an album to say this is the beginning; where it all started from and has been a continuous work ever since. Something that signifies that all the songs are intertwinned. And so, Opus. 1 was the name I chose. Where it all came from, the first songs, continuing to now, all with a similar story. All done on acoustic.
I didn't actually think this project would start at all, because I always come up with ideas in my head that seem so wonderful, and then it turns out I digress onto something else or I just never have the motivation to start. However, one day I did start. And I'm so glad I did. I didn't even hold back on the singing. The songs on Opus. 1 need to be as they should be. Perfect.
So this collection of songs are very simple, as they would be heard live at a gig. In their simpliest form, I believe the songs and lyrics can be appreciated a lot more.
Day 1
I can't actually remember which song I recorded first. I know I began by recording Red Bridge first of all, but didn't notice I had left my echo pedal on through the guitar piece, and so was fucked off at the end when listening to an electrofied acoustic. Definitely not what I wanted. I know 'Jinx' was one of the first, possibly the first. It was either 'Jinx', 'Induna' or 'Vixen - Part 1, 2, 3, and 4'. Whatever came first, the collection began, and in the first of two days I recorded 7 songs: 'Jinx', 'Induna', 'Vixen - Part 1, 2, 3 and 4', 'Merchant City Man', 'Thursday 5th April 2007 @ 11.51am', 'Halo Effect' and 'Dying Rose of January'. I was so so happy with the recordings, and needed to put them up on youtube quickly as a) I was running out of time and b) cause they sounded better than I thought they would and was eager to get them up.
I wanted some artwork for the songs. I wanted something quite personal and almost classical looking. I had a few nights before day 1 recordings, drew an abstract picture of my Blackberry connected to my old ipod, with some musical notes around it. The rest of the ink drawing has my Blackberry connected to a book I was reading at the time (Bronson 3: Up on the Roof by Charles Bronson), and drew some Blackberry and internet icons next to this. I took some photos of the drawing, put them on the computer, selected one, edited it into a square, put the chosen title 'Opus. 1', and instead of putting just my name, I thought I'd put 'Songs by Wullae Wright' as it is a general collection of all my songs. I didn't like it the way it was, so inverted the cover, and it looked much better. Classy in my opinion, with a modern twist with the ipod and Blackberry. Think it sums me up very well.
So I added these seven new songs to youtube. I have had positive comments so far and am pleased with the recordings.
Day 2
Eager to get as much done as I could, I set myself up again for the recording. I also thought that day that I'd maybe want to add some old piano tunes on it too, just to mix it up a little and to also let people hear these songs that are never played live. So I began by looking through the list of 'acoustic versions' I'd written on my phone and found 'A butterfly, A bouncy castle and A pole joust'. I have always loved that song and really enjoy playing it. It is a very personal song to me which always makes me feel good to play. So I recorded this. I had made sure that the fx pedal effects were exactly the same levels as Day 1, and that the volumes were all the same. I then moved to piano (or keyboard), and recorded 'Equilibruim' and 'House of Mirrors'. I wasn't too sure about 'House of Mirrors' but I thought, this is a collection of as much as I can do, and it is important to put as much in. So I then recorded Red Bridge and it turned out exactly as I wanted it! Perfect. I then relearned and recorded 'Loco Loco', which I performed once at a gig. I had actually forgotten it even had lyrics!! So I relearned them, and that was the last song I had time to record. Another 5 in the bag.
I have ideas for other Opus. 1 songs such as: 'Spitting Feathers', 'The Search' and 'Necropolis'. I still need to edit and record more songs on 'Anonymous'; however this Opus. 1 project is a good digression, and I'm happy to be finally recording all the unheard and unrecorded songs. Not to sound morbid, but it makes me think that when I pass away, they will all be there, and nothing was left undone. It makes me happy.

The Lovers and Dot-com Bubble
Yesterday (06/05/2011) morning I had sat down at the computer, and had just under an hour. I had set up the guitar, etc, and was ready to record. I began recording one of the guitar tunes I had written a few days ago, whilst in the living room. I knew I was going to put the lyrics I had written entitled ‘Dot-com Bubble’ to it.
So I began by getting a beat. I wanted something dancey, so after a small search I found a very quick jungle-sounding beat. I then had to slow the beat down as it was a little too quick. I then found a good rock sound for the guitar, and recorded the main riff. It didn’t take too long, and sounded great. I then added bass, which consisted of using the echo machine pedal I have, which reversed the riff, and make it seem like there is an awkward beat in the song.
This was where I got up to. I had a basic song now. I did add a guitar solo; however it wasn’t very good, so I left it out. So later that night, I had more time to record. Good times, so I set everything up again.
I started messing around with ‘Dot-com Bubble’, editing the beat, adding duplicate guitars, etc. I got a little bored and so thought I’d add some vocals. I selected number 9 on my Zoom pedal, and recorded. I screamed where was required, and enjoyed doing so. The effect I used is a little to tinny for my liking, but the vocals I feel a good, so I will leave the vocals the way they are. The song is very raw. I didn’t finish editing the song until after I finished recording ‘The Lovers’. I edited ‘Dot-com Bubble’, which has turned it in a very quick paced rollercoaster of stops, starts and odd beats. Again it is very raw, and I like the sound this way.
Before editing the final version of ‘Dot-com Bubble’, I began work on ‘The Lovers’. I have had the idea in my head for a little while now, to record it on acoustic with violin. So I set up with acoustic, recorded it. Sounding great. Then I added vocals, which worked out really well. I added violins and piano, but didn’t feel like they fit, so left them out. Trying to record the piano piece took numerous attempts. It was incredibly frustrating. I then after a while added a basic drum and basic bass riff. This made such a different to the song, giving it a very deep quality. So once I had this: guitar, singing, drums and bass, I felt it needed one more thing. So I added the violin back in, cut half of it out, and I think the finished song sounds fantastic, and is perfect for the ‘Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey’ collection of songs. This song was originally written back last year (See previous posts) and I’m very happy to have finally finished it. I’m also delighted with ‘Dot-com Bubble’ which will fit well with the collection of ‘Anonymous’ songs I now have.

Rehearsal Studio Photos
Got up today, and bus and walked it to the rehearsal studio. I got there before the owner did. I stood outside, actually like I had lots of important things to look at on my phone. When I was really just browsing through twitter, etc.
So got room number 8, with the man saying 'Oh guess you haven't been here before?'..., and I was like, 'eh, yes I have been here before...' Anyway, got the room, got set up, and got rehearsing. I recorded each song I did on video, and I have made audio versions of certain ones. I did more songs than I had on the setlist for this Saturday's gig. I did it just to record more on video. But my voice didn't hold up for Superhero, so I am now considering doing Dark Political Arts. I am still unsure.

The Story Behind: Building a Nest
The natural wood flooring always looked dirty. No matter how many times you cleaned it, it always looked dirty. And as I sat on it, looking at how to assemble my newly ordered bed, I felt rather content. My girlfriend was helping me construct it. It took us a while to build it, but it was so nice. Just the two of us, building the bed together. We were both happy and discussed our future. The building of the bed was almost symbolic of what we both wanted; to build our lifes together.
I had had the idea to name a song 'Building a Nest', which was reserved for a song that then became 'The Halo Effect'. I liked the title. I thought it was kind and thoughtful, beautiful and gentle. The idea of two little birds building a comfortable and cosy nest together, to raise children in and live there, just seems idyllic to me. The title then sat there for a long time with no music.
One day, I sat in the same flat as I had built the bed. I had started to write a really easy, simple tune on the acoustic. My girlfriend was in the room with me, doing something on the computer. she thought it sounded nice, which I take as a compliment as she does not always agree with my music taste. I began experimenting with it, using my echo machine pedal. It sounded excellent and I recorded a version like this. But I didn't like it in the end, and reverted back to just playing it acoustically on its own. I recorded it like this, and added only one other guitar in the back ground. Gentle.
I then, quite quickly wrote the lyrics for the song, and recorded the vocals in essentially one go. There are three sets of vocals on it, and all were recorded only once. The recording was very simple, quick and turned out well. When I completed the final piece I let my girlfriend hear it. She liked it. Now my wife, she likes me to play it at live gigs.

Pleasant Statistics
I have distanced myself from my blog and music for some time now. There are two reasons for this: 1. I have been quite busy, which then affects 2. where, i have had absolutely no time to write, record or practice my music.
I have had small periods or moments of musical delight, which have been very short lived. I have recorded a piano tune; but have done absolutely nothing to it. I have also come up with a lovely and rather pleasant sound guitar riff; which, I have had absolutely no time to do anything with it. I have also written more lyrics; which I have not finished. I have even been beatboxing to myself in my places of work, and recording the beat box and lyrics on my phone, as to not forget about it later.
However, amongst all this short term music bliss, I today went onto my www.soundcloud.com/wullaewright page to find some interesting statistics about the tracks I have up there. My songs are popular (or have been listened to at least) in these countries: Turkey, France, Italy, Tunisia, Peru, Japan, Indonesia, U.S, and the U.K. I am clearly delighted at this; to be out there so far and wide, and hopefully that will grow. However, what made me even more delighted was to see that an individual had downloaded one of my songs. I assumed it would be someone in the U.K., and maybe in my circle of friends, but it turns out it was an individual in Tunisia. Someone in Tunisia liked my song that much, that they felt compled to click on the 'download' button, and now has the song on their computer. This, to me, is a beautiful and intriguing thought. Thank you Tunisian person. Thank you.

Reinventing Kats
I had been (or currently am still) in a band named Hercules Mandarin. They are a fantastic wee collective of different Scottish musicians, who have combined their talents to create tradition Scottish music, couple with acoustic and rock sound. One of their best know songs is 'Kats'. A beautiful number that becomes upbeat. Written by Christopher Rodgers, it is a great wee song, which I am honoured to play with the band.
So I, late last night, decided to begin the process of doing a cover of this song. I listened to a live version of me and the band at The Mill, Glasgow, and thought it sounded great. So I want to make this version of 'Kats' distinctly different from the original. So I have begun the process of reinventing 'Kats' by using only bleeps, pitches, tones and cut up drum beats. Similarly to the format of 'In the Mix'. Sounds quite interesting at present, but I will need to keep working on it. I stopped mixing it at about 5am last night. It is an awkward song to mix with all the bleeps. So I will really need to look at the song again, but I am excited about this remix of 'Kats'.
I will also over the next while try to get something for the 'The Caged Foundling' lyrics I recently wrote.

The mix has a voice...
So comfortable with the time I had, and the means of recording, I began the vocal process. Grabbed my leads from my white cupboard, fired computer up, got Zoom pedal and microphone, and set it all up. Didn't work a few times when tried it. No obvious reason why it does that sometimes, but it does happen. Got audacity up and running, witnessed all the wavy lines and though 'let's get a voice for this'.

To record the layers of vocals, I use Making Waves, which I prefer to record with initially. Got a repetitive vocal looping of 'I'm always running'. Recording quality is really good, but the song would be very boring with only this lines. So differently timed, I also added 'from the shadows, they hunt you down, and steal your soul'. Works well. So then added another vocal arrangement. This one a little more melodic and seems to have worked out well too. The only the problem with the song is the lyrics. Feel I could quite possibly get something better, but at the moment I shall work with these. At present I am editing the vocals to try and arrange them in an order I feel is appropriate for this song.
I will hopeful have this song finished over the next while, and will have it up on myspace for you and the rest of the world to listen to.

In the Mix - Midnight Hours
It's 01:15 at the moment as I gaze at the small clock on my computer monitor. I can see the wavy lines of the recorded music, blue snaking across the screen. I hear the wind lash the outside world, and a lone truck driving past in the distance. The world is so quiet, yet I am trying to finish my song. It is still in the mix at present. Thought I had it done, just to add singing and that's it. No. I'm trying some more stuff. Got to admit, I'm tired. But sometimes that is when I can things done.
I have messed about with random samples of music I have recorded before; I have also tried more tones and edited pitches, using phaser and echo effects, all to no avail! Began work again, and have realised that nothing new added is the best thing.
What I have done however is look through one of my song folders and found a really good acoustic version of 'Putting the Monster in the Box' - a song about bipolar disorder. It is a good recording.

In the mix
I currently have numerous songs lying around on my computer. A little here, and a little bit there. At the moment, they don't really make much sense. All beats and blips. Stammering and stops.
In 2007 I went through the whole 'I love my acoustic guitar' phase, which was nice. 2008 saw me use dance with rock surrounded by a dirty night theme. 2009-2010 has seen a long period of what I regard as heavy, industrial dance coupled with chilling psychotic dream-state subject matter. It continues and continues.
Recently I started mixing a song with beeps and noise, and sample beats and it is turning out to be quite a good tune. It is oddly timed, missing beats, with an jumpy awkwardness. It is layered and takes the song time to begin. I think however, it may be one of the best tunes I have written in a while. I will put it on www.myspace.com/wullaewright when I have complete it. I think it will fit nicely into the odd arrangement of uncomfortable songs I already have for 'In Cloud Cuckooland'.
